My buying and reselling gift cards experiment

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent about 15 hours last week trying to see if I could make a profit by taking full advantage of various promotions, the large majority of that time consumed by buying and reselling gift cards to max out some current Amex Offers. Luckily I live in a city where it’s not hard to find a Whole Foods, Dollar General and Carrabba’s on my way home, so I didn’t have to go too far out of my way. The actual purchasing of the gift cards went much smoother than expected, but it was the work on the front and back end that took the most time.I have 18 American Express cards at my disposal, including authorized user cards and Bluebird cards. That means that I needed to do 54 separate transactions. Sounds terrible, but it went pretty fast and I ended up having great conversations with cashiers at both Carrabba’s and Whole Foods who were interested in traveling with points and miles themselves.

I decided to keep a few cards for our own use and sell the rest on Cardpool. I like this guide by Doctor of Credit, ‘The Complete Guide to Selling Your Unwanted Gift Cards for Cash.‘ I did two separate orders on Cardpool to ensure I did not go over the $1,000 per account limit for cashback on Be Frugal.

Here are the basic steps:

Step 1: Register for Amex Offers. You can do this by logging in to your online American Express account and looking under ‘My Offers’ or linking to social media. Complete guide from Miles to Memories here, and info on setting up a “Amex Sync Machine,” courtesy of Frequent Miler.

Step 2: Visit retailers to purchase gift cards. For this example, I’m using Whole Foods. The offer was $15 back on $75 purchase, so since I have 18 cards linked to the offer I knew I needed to spend $1,350. This cashier was more comfortable ringing it all up as separate transactions, but sometimes you’ll get one willing to ring it all up as one or a few transactions and split tender 18 ways (i.e. as many cards as you have). Maximizing free money offers for a profit of almost $1,000

Warning: This gets lengthy complicated, but there’s lots of free money involved. Below is a list of offers I redeemed in the past week and a half or so to make a total profit of $961.39. I was keeping it more as a running checklist for myself, but though many of the offers are now expired I thought it might be helpful to share for you to see how you can make money on these types of opportunities in the future.

Bank Bonuses: $125 for new US Bank Checking Account. More info here from Doctor of Credit.
Total=$130 ($125 + $5, in form of 500 Thank You points, for initial deposit into account)

Shopping Portals: For any newbies, shopping portals are an important part of the points and miles game because they offer opportunities to earn bonus miles or cashback from online shopping and travel booking simply by clicking through a shopping portal to your website. Many times these shopping portals offer limited time deals, and pay bonuses if you refer your friends. More info on basics of shopping portals and links to my favorite sites Here’s what I used this week: Continue reading

My big Amex Offers screw up with Tweet Deck and Lowe’s giftcards

Last week there was an awesome new Amex Offer for a $10 statement credit if you spend $50 at Lowe’s (deal is now dead). The reason this offer was so valuable is you can buy lots of different types of giftcards at Lowe’s, and essentially receive them 20% off in the end.

If you’re unfamiliar with Amex Offers, my go-to reference post is Frequent Miler’s Creating an Amex Machine. Turns out my own Amex Machine was not a well-functioning one.

I hadn’t seen a good Amex Offer in awhile, so I suppose I was out of practice, but here’s how a two-second error cost me quite a bit of time and caused me to miss out on $110. Continue reading

Since the blog’s been pretty quiet lately, here’s an attempt to catch you up on what you may have missed. Below is a round-up of current deals in the miles and points world. Many tips taken from other great bloggers (no need for me to write too much if they’ve already done full posts).

Long overdue update: getting organized, travel plans and promotions

Holy cow! I did a terrible, terrible job of blogging last month. This post is intended to catch up on the past month and preview a few upcoming posts.

One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to blog more. Just kidding, obviously. It was actually to get, and stay, more organized with this hobby. Traveling for (almost) free requires a lot of time and dedication to keep track of credit card sign ups, bonuses and annual fees, manufactured spending and booking, and often rebooking, travel plans. As evident in our ‘Year in Review’ post, the Villain and I went a little credit card sign-up crazy, obtaining 23 new credit cards between the two of us. We also had a busy travel schedule, visiting over thirty cities in five countries. It’s easy to get busy, get behind and miss a deadline here, lose a gift card there, etc. So anyway, all that to say I spent a lot of time last month doing inventory of our credit cards and spending, creating new systems for tracking points, and revaluating our travel plans. Look for a mini-series on these techniques soon!

One of the highlights of January was Caleb's parents visiting over MLK weekend. We loved the tea tour at Celestial Seasonings in Boulder, hairnets and all!

Travel
Houston
Like most months I spent some time in Houston for business. I flew Spirit Airlines for the first time ever, and honestly it wasn’t that bad. My experience with Spirit was smooth from beginning to end and even with all of the ridiculous fees my flight was still cheaper than a comparable ticket on any other airline that day.

Maximizing the Starbucks Amex Offer

There’s been a flood of great Amex Offers lately, and one of the offers I’m excited about is for Starbucks. Unfortunately it appears that the max number of card members have enrolled in the Amex Starbucks offer, so it’s no longer available, but hopefully you were able to get in on the deal. If not, let it be a reminder to tweet the offer out as soon as you see it so that your cards are synced, and then you have until the actual expiration date to take advantage of the deal.

I am not a huge coffee drinker but I frequently have work meetings at Starbucks and occasionally I like to take my computer or my Bible and sit in a coffee shop for a while.

This offer is ONLY available online at store.starbucks.com. The offer is good for $5 off a $10 purchase, and reloading a gift card will qualify. There’s a chance buying a new giftcard will work online, but the terms are unclear, and the minimum online is $15 vs. $5 in-store. Chances are the nearest Starbucks isn’t too far away either.

IMG_1517Here’s my strategy for earning lots of free Starbucks drinks or food for only $10:

  1. Visit a Starbucks store in person to buy a gift card for $5.
  2. Register your gift card here to earn a free drink and a free item on your birthday. So already you’re ahead, because for $5 you’ll receive a free drink, which can easily be over $5, and any food or drink item on your birthday.
  1. Click through a portal to store.starbucks.com. Shop Discover is the highest today at 10%, but since I don’t have a Discover I opted for the Ultimate Rewards Portal for 5 points per dollar.

UR says 4 points per $, but when you log-in it actually shows 5x

  2. From store.starbucks.com, click ‘CARD’ on top menu bar, which will open a new window. Scroll down and click ‘Reload,’ then log-in with the account info you created in Step 2.
    Starbucks reload
  3. Follow the prompts to reload $10 on to your gift card and make sure you pay with the American Express card you registered with the #AmexStarbucks offer to receive a $5 statement credit.

Basically you will have only spent $10 out of pocket and you will end up with a $15 Starbucks gift card, two free drinks, and 50 Ultimate Rewards points. Not a bad deal!

If you opt in for the Starbucks emails (which you have to do to receive your free drinks), you’ll periodically receive offers for more free items or discounts at Starbucks. Last week I had one for a free breakfast sandwich, and this week there’s a buy three, get one free holiday drink offer.

10 days until Small Business Saturday, which means lots of FREE MONEY if you have an American Express card

Small Business Saturday Overview

American Express launched Small Business Saturday in 2010. It is the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so November 29th this year. This is one of my favorite promotions of the year because it encourages folks to shop locally and awards cardholders statement credits for dining and holiday shopping! The promotion has varied from year to year, but this year you can earn up to $30 per American Express card. You can get a $10 statement credit for transactions of at least $10, up to three times per card.

You can find eligible businesses on this map.

Which cards are eligible?

Any American Express card, except corporate cards, should be eligible. Authorized user cards can also be counted separately for this promotion, since they have a unique card number. You can also register non-Amex issued American Express cards you may have, such as the Citi American Airlines cards. This year both Serve and Bluebird cards will qualify, but the Prepaid Target REDcard will not.

How do you register?

  1. Visit the enrollment page to manually enter your name, email and card number.
  2. Tweet #AmexShopSmall if your cards are already connected.
  3. Log-in to your online American Express account and click “My Offers.”
