My big Amex Offers screw up with Tweet Deck and Lowe’s giftcards

Last week there was an awesome new Amex Offer for a $10 statement credit if you spend $50 at Lowe’s (deal is now dead). The reason this offer was so valuable is you can buy lots of different types of giftcards at Lowe’s, and essentially receive them 20% off in the end.

If you’re unfamiliar with Amex Offers, my go-to reference post is Frequent Miler’s Creating an Amex Machine. Turns out my own Amex Machine was not a well-functioning one.

I hadn’t seen a good Amex Offer in awhile, so I suppose I was out of practice, but here’s how a two-second error cost me quite a bit of time and caused me to miss out on $110. Continue reading

Free Money with Amex Sync Offers

If you have an American Express credit card, you are eligible for several “free money” promotions that Amex runs through social media periodically. Some of the promotions you can register for through your Amex online account on the ‘Offers for You’ tab, and some you will need to sync your credit card to your preferred social media channel. Once registering, to be eligible for the promotion you’ll need to “like” on Facebook, “tweet” on Twitter or “check in” on Foursquare to register for each specific promotion. It’s a good idea to go ahead and register for all offers you think you may use, since it’s essentially free money if you happen to visit any of these businesses. When you use your registered card, you should receive an email confirmation and the statement credit usually shows up within a few business days.

American Express Online Account “My Offers Tab
Here are the offers currently showing up in my account. Check yours by logging into your online banking account at americanexpress.com, clicking the ‘Offers for You’ tab, and saving each offer to your card.

Amex Sync

Make sure that you check available offers for each different card if you have multiple American Express cards (with different numbers), as you’re eligible for the statement credits for every one, even if you’re only the authorized user. I am an authorized user on The Villain’s Starwood Preferred Guest Amex, and had to create a separate log-in to see and save offers. Often the offers are different. For instance, the offers in the graphic above are available for The Villain’s SPG card, but the offers below are eligible for mine.

  •  iTunes: Spend $5+, get a $5 statement credit. Expires 4/30/2014.
  • Crate&Barrel: Spend $50, get a $10 statement credit. Expires 5/22/14.
  • Lowes: Spend $50, get a $10 statement credit. Expires 5/31/14. **Points High tip: You can buy gift cards at Lowe’s for many popular stores and restaurants. I like to buy Whole Foods gift cards there to use for groceries.
  • Pet Smart: Spend $25, get a $5 statement credit. Expires 4/30/14.
  • Zappos: Spend $150, get a $30 statement credit. Expires 5/31/14.

Twitter Offers
Click here for the landing page to sync your cards with your Twitter. You are only able to sync one card per Twitter account. Once your card is registered, ‘tweet your way to savings with special #hastags.’ Follow @AmericanExpress or visit amex.co/faves to see offers. For each offer you sign up for, you will receive a confirmation message from Amex.
